According to an official investigation released on April 21, the rear-seat pilot, wearing night vision goggles, was attempting to adjust airflow from the air conditioning unit. In doing so, he accidentally pressed the emergency jettison switch located near the vent controls. The button, marked in red or black-yellow stripes, is designed to immediately release external payloads—including weapons and fuel tanks—during in-flight emergencies to reduce aircraft weight and improve maneuverability.
The aircraft dropped:
- Two machine gun pods, each equipped with a 12.7 mm machine gun and approximately 250 rounds
- Two empty auxiliary fuel tanks
The dropped equipment landed in a remote mountainous area in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province, roughly 125 km east of Seoul, causing no civilian injuries or property damage. The aircraft safely returned to Wonju Air Base.
A search operation involving a HH-60 helicopter and 270 military personnel successfully recovered the two gun pods and most of the ammunition in nearby Yeongwol, Gangwon Province. However, the fuel tanks and several ammunition boxes remain missing. Flight training was temporarily suspended but is set to resume on April 22.

The KA-1 Woongbi is a light attack and forward air control aircraft, developed from the KT-1 trainer by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI). It features:

Casualties and Damage from March Incident:
- 44 injured, including 30 civilians and 14 soldiers
- At least 166 structures and 12 vehicles were damaged or destroyed
