V-(으)ㄹ 리가 없다/있다 grammar = it can’t be…/how could it be…? ~express disbelief or impossibility/possibility about a situation

Usage:

- V-을/ㄹ 리가 없다 is used to express disbelief or impossibility about a situation. It is used when the speaker believes that a situation or action is highly unlikely or impossible to occur. = there is no way that, it can’t be, it’s impossible that…

 

그 소문은 사실일리가 없어.

That rumor can’t be the truth.

 

- This expression can be used with double negatives to emphasize certainty:

수지는 정말 똑똑한데 KAIST에 들어가지 않았을 리가 없어요.

Suzy is so smart, there's no way she didn't get into KAIST.

 

- V-을/ㄹ 리가 있다 is the opposite expression used to express possibility, often in rhetorical questions or hypothetical situations = is it possible that…? How could it be…?

 

그렇게 똑똑한 사람이 그런 일을 할 리가 있어요?

Is it possible that such a smart person would do such a thing?

Verb + 을/ㄹ 리가 없다 = it can’t be, there is no way that [Present tense] 

먹다 -> 먹을 리가 없다

자다 -> 잘 리가 없다

끝나다 -> 끝날 리가 없다

실수하다 -> 실수할 리사 없다

*만들다 -> 만들 리가 없다

*벌다 -> 벌 리가 없다

 

Verb 았/었/였 + 을 리가 없다 = it couldn’t be, there was no way that [Past tense] 

가다 -> 갔을 리가 없다

먹다 -> 먹었을 리가 없다

끝나다 -> 끝났을 리가 없다

*모르다 -> 몰랐을 리가 없다

 

Noun + (이)ㄹ 리가 없다 = it can’t be, there is no way that 

사실 -> 사실일 리가 없다

학생 -> 학생일 리가 없다

대전 -> 대전일 리가 없다
