How to Issue a Korean National ID Card (
주민등록증): A Step-by-Step Guide for Naturalized Citizens

Obtaining a Korean National ID card (주민등록증) is an essential step after acquiring Korean citizenship. Follow these steps to ensure a smooth process:

Step 1: Visit Your Nearest 주민센터

Head to your local 주민센터, including the 주민센터 near your residence. Bring the following documents:

  1. 2 Photos: Size 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm, taken recently.
  2. 귀화증서 (Naturalization Certificate)
  3. 외국국적 불행사 서약서 (Pledge of Not-to-Use Foreign Nationality)

Step 2: Request and Complete the Application

At the 주민센터, request the issuance of your 주민등록증 and follow these steps:

  1. Fill Out the Form: Complete the required application form.
  2. Fingerprinting: Get fingerprinted as part of the process.
  3. Processing Time: Wait approximately 2 weeks for your 주민등록증 card to be ready. You can also request a temporary 주민등록증 card if needed.

Step 3: Return Your Foreigner Registration Card

After receiving your 주민등록증 card, you must return your 외국인등록증 (Foreigner Registration Card) or 영주권등록증 (Permanent Resident Card) to the Immigration Office or its branch within 30 days to avoid fines.

Important Tip: Before returning your foreigner card, make several copies for your records in case you need to refer to it later.

By following these steps, you can successfully obtain your Korean National ID card and comply with all necessary regulations.
