V-(으)ㄹ 생각이다 grammar = be thinking of ~express that someone has a thought of doing something


 V-/ 생각이다 grammar = be thinking of, be planning to ~express that someone has a plan or thought of doing something

 

Usage:

- V-() 생각이다 is used to express that someone has a plan or thought of doing something = be thinking of, be planning to

 

- V-() 생각이었다 is used to express that someone had a plan or thought of doing something but in reality the plan didn’t happen = be thinking of… but (example 9 ,10)

 

Tense:

Verb + / 생각이다 = be thinking of, be planning to

가다 -> 생각이다

사다 -> 생각이다

먹다 -> 먹을 생각이다

일하다 -> 일할 생각이다

나가다 -> 나갈 생각이다

취직하다 -> 취직할 생각이다

유학하 -> 유학할 생각이다

공부하다 -> 공부할 생각이다



Examples:

 

1. 졸업 계획이 있어요?

- 저는 부모님 일을 도울 생각이에요.

Do you have any plan after graduation?

- I'm thinking of helping my parents.

 

2. 이번 학기에 무슨 수업을 들을 거예요?

- 한국 역사 수업을 들을 생각이에요.

What classes will you take this semester?

- I'm thinking of taking a Korean history class.

 

3. 책을 찾으러 도서관에 생각이에요.

I am planning to go to library to find a book.

 

4. 수업 후에 점심을 먹을 생각이에요.

I'm thinking of having lunch after class.

 

5. 저는 대학원에 진학할 생각인데 조언 주세요.

I am thinking of going to graduate school, please give me some advice.

 

6. 대학을 졸업하면 바로 취직할 생각입니다.

I am planning to get a job right after graduating from college.

 

7. 나이가 들면 고향에 가서 생각이에요.

When I get older, I plan to go back to my hometown to live.

 

8. 비가 와서 오늘은 집에 나가지 않을 생각이에요.

It’s raining, so I am thinking of not going out today.

 

9. 어제 친구들과 축구를 생각이었는데 비가 와서 했어요.

I was going to play soccer with my friends yesterday, but it was raining, so I couldn't.

 

10. 생일에 수지한테 선물을 생각이었는데 깜빡 잊어버렸어요.

I was going to give Suzy a present for her birthday, but I forgot.

 

11. 다음 주부터 아르바이트를 하게 됐어요.

- 그래요? 저도 다음 달부터 아르바이트를 생각이에요.

I started working part-time from next week.

- Really? I also plan to start a part-time job from next month.

 

12. 지난 학기 성적이 좋아서 이번 학기에 장학금을 받게 됐어요.

- 축하해요. 저도 열심히 공부해서 다음 학기에는 장학금을 받을 생각이에요.

I got a scholarship this semester because my grades were good last semester.

- Congratulations. I also study hard and plan to receive a scholarship next semester.

 

Differences between -() 생각이다 grammar, -()려고 하다 grammar, -() 예정이다/ 예정이 있다 grammar, and -() 계획이다계획이 있다 grammar

 

1. V-() 생각이다 = think of doing something without a firm decision or plan

내년에 한국에 유학할 생각이 있어요.

I am thinking of studying in Korea next year.

 

2. V-()려고 하다= express a stronger intention or plan to do something

내년에 한국에 유학하려고 해요.

I intend to study in Korea next year.

 

3. V-() 예정이다 / 예정이 있다= almost decide to do something

내년에 한국에 유학할 예정이 있어요.

I plan to study in Korea next year.

 

4. V-() 계획이다 / 계획이 있다= decide to do something

내년에 한국에 유학할 계획이 있어요.

I decide to study in Korea next year.
