(이)라고 and (이)라고 하다 grammar = said, asked, wrote ~direct quotation in Korean

Usage:

-(이)라고 is used to directly quote what one said, asked, thought, or wrote.

Structure:

"Speech/word" +(이)라고 + ending verb (하다, 말하다, 부탁하다,...)

"Speech/word" + (이)라고: 

의사 -> '의사'라고 

휴가 -> '휴가'라고 

방학 ->' 방학'이라고

학생 -> '학생'이라고

주차 금지 -> '주차 금지'라고

Common ending verbs:

라고 + 말하다 = 라고 말했다 (spoke)
라고 + 이야기하다 =  라고 이야기했다 (talked)
라고 + 그러다 = 라고 그렸다 (indicated)
라고 +  무러보다 = 라고 무러봤다 (asked)
라고 +  생각하다 = 라고 생각했다 (thought)
라고 +  부탁하다 = 라고 부탁했다 (requested)
라고 +  쓰다 = 라고 썼다 (wrote)
라고 +  듣다 = 라고 들었다 (listened)
라고 +  써 있다 = 라고 써 있었다 (written)





Examples

1. 에디슨은 '실패는 성공의 어머니입니다.'라고 했어요.

Edison said "Failure is the mother of success".

2. 예수님은 '서로 사랑하세요.'라고 말씀했어요.
Jesus said "Love each other".

3. 안나 씨는 '한국어를 같이 공부합시다.'라고 말했어요.
Anna said "Let's study Korean together".

4. 그는 '커피를 별로 안 마셔요.'라고 했어요. 

He said he don't drink coffee.

5. 직원이 '어서 오세요.'라고 말해요.

The staff says 'Welcome.'

6. 불이 나면 '불이야!'라고 큰 소리로 말해야 돼요.

If there is a fire, you have to say '불이야!' in a loud voice.

7. 오빠는 공부할 때마다 방문에 '공부하는 중'이라고 써서 붙여 둔다.

Every time my brother studies, he writes 'studying'  and sticks it up on the door.
