L1.35 V-고 싶다 and V-고 싶어 하다 = want to, prefer to ~ express one's wish or hope

Usage:

- V-고 싶다 is used to express the 1st person's wish or hope (e.g. I, we) = want to, prefer to

- V-고 싶다 can be used with both particles 을/를 and 이/가 (example 1, 2)

- V-고 싶다 can't be used for the 2nd person (e.g. you) statement, but it can be used for the 2nd person question. (example 8-10)

- V-고 싶어 하다 is used to express the 3rd person's wish or hope (e.g. he, she, it) = want to, prefer to

Tense:

Verb + 고 싶다 or + 고 싶어 하다
보다 --> 보고 싶다 --> 보고 싶어 하다

사다 --> 사고 싶다 --> 사고 싶어 하다
먹다 --> 먹고 싶다 --> 먹고 싶어 하다
울다 --> 울고 싶다 --> 울고 싶어 하다
만나다 --> 만나고 싶다 --> 만나고 싶어 하다
잘하다 --> 잘하고 싶다 --> 잘하고 싶어 하다
되다 --> 되고 싶다 -> 되고 싶어 하다
Adjective + 아/어지 + 고 싶다
날씬하다 --> 날씬해지고 싶다

건강하다  --> 건강해지고 싶다
행복하다 --> 행복해지고 싶다

1. 한국말을 못해요. 한국말을 잘하고 싶어요.
I can't speak Korean well. I want to speak Korean well.

2. 가족을 2년 동안 못 만났어요. 가족이 보고 싶어요.
I haven’t seen my family for 2 years. I want to see my family.

3. 저는 가수가 되고 싶어요.
I want to become a singer.

4. 날씨가 더워서 수박을 먹고 싶어요.
It’s hot, so I want to eat watermelon.

5. 고향에 가고 싶은데 일이 너무 많아서 못 가요.
