Usage :
- Indicate the subject’s acting in a way contrary to reality = pretend to, act like…
- when used with this expression, 알다 is only used in the present tense, not past tense 
- In past tense, -(으)ㄴ 척했다 = subject had done something but did not in reality, -는 척했다 = subject was in the process of doing something but in reality was not.
- Can be replaced by -ㄴ/은/는 체하다 grammar (same meaning in all cases)

Tense :

1. Adjective
- A-(으)ㄴ 척하다

아프다 -- 아픈 척하다 
아프지 않다 -- 아프지 않은 척하다

2. Verb
- 현재 : -는 척하다
- 과거 : -(으)ㄴ 척하다

*알다 -- 아는 척하다
자다 -- 자는 척하다 -- 잔 척하다
먹다 -- 먹는 척하다 -- 먹은 척하다

3. Noun
- N인 척하다

부자 -- 부자인 척하다

1. 방금 넘어졌을 때 아프지 않았어요?
- 정말 아팠어요. 하지만 사람들이 보고 있어서 아프지 않은 척 했어요.

Didn't it hurt when you fell a while ago?
- It was really hurt. But since everyone was watching, I acted like it didn't hurt.

2. 잠이 깼지만 피곤해서 자는 척했어요
I woke up but tired and pretended to sleep

3. 제 친구는 항상 다른 사람들 앞에서 아는 척하기를 좋아해요.

My friend enjoys acting like knowing everything whenever he’s in front of others.

4. 토니 씨가 부자가 아닌데도 친구들 앞에 항상 부자인 척하면서 든을 많이 써요.

Although Tony is not rich, he always acts like a rich man in front of his friend by spending a lot of money.

5. 나는 잘 알지도 못하면서 아는 척하는 사람이 제일 싫어요.

I really hate a person who pretends to know while don't know well.

6. 음 식이 부족한 것 같아서 저녁을 먹은 척했어요./먹은 체했어요.

Since the food seems insufficient I pretended as if I had eaten the dinner.

7. 다이어트를 하고 있어서 음식을 먹는 척했어요./먹는 체했어요.

Since I were in a diet, I pretended as if I had eaten the dinner.

Since my friend asked me to borrow some money, I acted like I don't have money.

10. 그 여자를 잘 아는 데도 아무것도 알지 못하는 척했어요.

Although I know that girl well, I pretended as if I know nothing about her.

11. 얘기하다가 왜 갑자기 자는 척해요?
- 쉿, 저기 앞에 할아버지가 걸어오시잖아요. 오늘은 좀 피곤해서 자리를 양보 못 하겠거든요.

Why do you pretend to sleep while in the middle of chatting?
- Shh! An old man over there is walking this way? I am tired today, so I don't feel like giving up  my seat.
