V-도록 grammar = so that, in order to ~focus on the action to achieve the goal

Usage:
- (1) V-도록 is used to indicate that the action is necessary to realize the goal (~focus on the action to achieve the goal). V-도록 can be used interchangeably with V-게. However, V-게 focuses on the goal to do action, whereas V-도록 focuses on the action to achieve the goal. = so that, in order to

실수하지 않도록 많이 연습했어요.
I practiced a lot so that I wouldn't make a mistake.


- (2) V-도록 is also be used to express a time limit, degree or method related to the action. = until, to the extent of

목이 아프도록 노래를 불렀어요.
I sang until my throat hurt.


Tense:

Positive sentence: Verb + -도록
보다 -- 보도록 -- 보게 (in order to see)
낫다 -- 낫도록 -- 낫게 (in order to get better)
시험을 볼 수 있다 -- 시험을 볼 수 있도록 -- 시험을 볼 수 있게 (in order to take the exam well)
이해하다 -- 이해하도록 -- 이해하게  (in order to understand)

Negative sentence: Verb + -지 않도록
늦다 -- 늦지 않도록 -- 늦지 않게 (in order not to be late)
맞다 -- 맞지 않도록 -- 맞지 않게 (in order not to get wet)
모자라다 -- 모자라지 않도록 -- 모자라지 않게 (in order not to be in short of ...)
감기에 걸리다 -- 감기에 걸리지 않도록 -- 감기에 걸리지 않게 (in order not to catch a cold)


Examples:

*V-도록 grammar = (1) in order to, so that

1. 아이가 잘 이해하도록 천천히 설명했어요.
I explained it slowly so that the child understood it well.

2. 약속 시간에 늦지 않도록 준비를 서둘렀어요.
I hurried to get ready so that I wouldn't be late for the appointment.

3. 친구 생일을 잊지 않도록 달력에 표시했어요.
I marked my friend's birthday on my calendar so that I wouldn't forget it.

4. 손님이 많이 찾아오도록 가게 홍보를 열심히 하고 있다.
We are working hard to promote the store so that many customers come.

5. 유럽으로 여행할 수있도록 이제부터 돈을 모이겠어요. 
I will save money from now in order to go traveling to Europe.

6.  시간을 낭비하지 않도록 계획을 잘 세워 보겠어요.
I will try to plan well in order not to waste my time.

7. 여러분이 잘 이해할 수 있도록 다시 한번 설명해 줄게요.
I will explain once again so that you all can understand well.

8. 몸이 빨리 낫도록 주말에는 푹 쉬세요.
Take a good rest in weekend so that you can get better quickly.

9. 아이가 자연 체험할 수 있도록 시골 농장에 가는 게 좋겠어요.
It’s better to go the country farm in order for children to experience nature.

10. 아이들이 밖에서 즐겁게 뛰어놀 수 있도록 동네 공원을 만들려고 한다.
I heard that they are going to make a village park so that children can have fun outside.

11. 음식을 얼마나 준비할까요?
- 음식이 모자라지 않도록 충분히 준비하세요.
How much food should I prepare?

12. 앤디 씨, 서류가 정리가 안 돼서 무엇이 어디에 있는지 찾을 수가 없네요.
- 서류를 쉽게 찾을 수 있도록 가나다 순으로 정리를 하겠습니다.

*V-도록 grammar = (2) until, to the extent of

1. 오늘은 음식이 맛있어서 배가 부르도록 먹었어요.
Today, I ate until I was full because the food was delicious.

2. 밤이 새도록 친구와 통화를 했어요.
I was on the phone with my friend (to the extent of) all night long.

3. 눈이 빠지도록 수지 씨를 기다렸지만 오지 않았어요.
I waited Suzy to the extent of blurring my eyes but she didn’t come.

4. 동생이 밤 12시가 되도록 집에 들어오지 않아서 걱정했어요.
I was worried because my brother didn't come home until midnight.

5. 어제 밤새도록 놀았더니 많이 피곤했어요.
I played (to the extent of) all night yesterday and was very tired.

6. 어제 술을 많이 마셔서 머리가 너무 아파요.
- 술을 취하도록 마시는 것은 건강에 좋지 않아요.
I drank a lot yesterday, so I have a headache.
- Drinking to get drunk is not good for your health.

7. 내가 좋아하는 축구팀의 경기가 있어서 지난 주말에 축구장에 갔다. 내가 응원하는 팀은 재작년부터 작년까지 2년이 지나도록 한 번도 우승을 못 했다. 어제는 정말 중요한 경기였기 때문에 아이부터 어른까지 모두가 목이 쉬도록 응원을 했다. 선수들도 유니폼이 땀에 젖도록 열심히 뛰었지만 아쉽게 2대1로 또 졌다. 비록 이번에도 우리 팀은 이기지 못했지만 나는 최선을 다한 선수들을 앞으로도 계속 응원할 것이다.
There was a game of my favorite soccer team, so I went to the soccer field last weekend. The team I support has never won a championship for the last 2 years from the year before last to last year. Yesterday was a really important game, so everyone from children to adults cheered until their throats were hoarse. The players also played hard until their uniforms were soaked in sweat, but unfortunately lost again 2-1. Although our team did not win this time, I will continue to support the players who did their best.
