N-대로, V-는 대로 grammar = (1) according to, just as, (2) as soon as


L2.64 N-대로, V-는 대로 grammar = as soon as, just as expected

Usage:
- (1) -대로, -는 대로 is used to express that the following action is in accordance with the preceding action = according to, just as 
- It can be combined with -고 싶다 and adjective 편하다 and 좋다 = ... as you want

E.g.
하고 싶은 대로 ... = ....anything you want
좋은 대로...= ...whatever you want
편한 대로 = as you like, it's up to you

(2) -는 대로 is also used to indicate that the following action occurs immediately upon the occurrence of the preceding one = once, as soon as
- In most case, -는 대로 can be replaced by -자 grammar
- Negative expressions (안 V or V지 않다) can't be used before V-(으)ㄴ/는 대로.


Tense:

Verb + -는 대로  
생각이 나는 대로 = do just as you think
시키는 대로 = do as I tell you
살고 싶은 대로 살 = live as you want to live
원하는 대로! = whatever you want!



Noun + -대로:
마음대로 = as you want
예상대로 = just as expected
약속대로 = as promised


Examples:

*대로, 는 대로 = according to, just as 

1. 수지 씨가 만든 음식이 정말 맛있네요.
- 요리책에 있는 대로 했더니 음식이 맛있게 됐어요.
The food you made is really delicious, Suzy.
- I made it according to my cookbook, and it turned out well.

2. 어제 축구 경기에서 어느 팀이 이겼어요?
- 예상대로 우리 팀이 이겼어요.
Which team won the football match yesterday?
- Just as expected, our team won.

3. 우리 계획대로 오후에 등산을 갈까요?
오후에 비가 온다고 하니까 다음에 가지요.
Shall we go hiking in the afternoon as we planned?
- They say it's going to rain in the afternoon, so let's go next time.

4. 여기에 있는 음식은 마음대로 모두 먹어도 됩니다.
You can eat all the food here as much as you like. 

5. 약속대로 영화를 보여 줄게요.
As promised, I'll show you the movie.

6. 내가 하는 대로 따라해 보세요.
Please follow just as I do.

7. 지금 생각이 나는 대로 그림인 한번 그려 보세요.
Please draw a picture based on whatever comes to mind now.

8. 언니가 지난 주말에 약속대로 어제 백화점에 가서 옷을 사 주었어요.
As promised last week, my sister went to department store and bought me some new clothes.



*(하고 싶은, 좋은, 편한) 대로 = ... as you want

하고 싶은 대로 모든 일을 다 할 수 있으면 좋겠어요.
I wish you can do anything you want.

좋은 대로 결정하세요.
Decide whatever you want.

내일은 편한 대로 옷을 입어도 돼요.
Tomorrow you can wear anything you want. 


*는 대로 = once, as soon as

1. 미국에서 돌아오는 대로 연락드리겠습니다. (= 돌아오자마자)
I will contact you as soon as I return from USA.

2. 미안하지만 그 일을 끝내는 대로 저 좀 도와주세요. (= 끝내자마자)
I am sorry, but please help me once you finish that work. 

3. 회의가 끝나는 대로 메일을 보내주세요. (= 끝나자마자)
Please send me an email as soon as the meeting is over. 

4. 방학이 시작되는 대로 고향에 가려고 해요. (= 시작하자마자)
I'll go back to my hometown as soon as vacation starts.

5. 편지를 받는 대로 답장을 주시면 좋겠어요. (= 받자마자)
I hope you will reply as soon as you receive the letter. 

6. 일이 끝나는 대로 약속 장소로 갈게요. (= 끝나자마자)
As soon as work is over, I'll go to the meeting place.


Differences between -는 대로 and -자마자 grammar

Although -는 대로 and -자마자 have the same meaning of "as soon as", they are different as follows:

1. -자마자 is often used with present and past tense, whereas -는 대로 is mostly used with  future tense.

도착하자마자 집으로 전화했어요. (O)
I called home as soon as I arrived.

도착하는대로 집으로 전화할게요. (O) / 도착하는대로 집으로 전화했어요. (X)
I'll call you home as soon as I arrive.

2. When using -자마자, both clauses are based on temporal relationship that does not need to be related. However, when using -는 대로, both clauses must be related, in which the action in the 1st clause is the reason or motivation for the result in the 2nd clause.

케이크를 완성하는 대로 너를 부를게요.
I'll call you as soon as I finish the cake.

까마귀가 날자마자 배가 떨어진다.
As soon as the crow flies, the pear falls.
