A/V-게 하다 grammar = make someone do something, cause someone to be in the state of A

Usage
- V-게 하다 = Make/let someone do something
- A-게 하다 = Cause someone to be in the state of A. 

Tense

Verb + -게 하다:

보다 --> 보게 하다 (let someone see something)

먹다 --> 먹게 하다 (let someone eat something)

놀다 --> 놀게 하다 (let someone play something)

기다리다 --> 기다리게 하다 (let someone wait)

쉬다 --> 쉬게 하다 (let someone rest)

Adjective + -게 하다:

귀찮다 --> 귀찮게 하다 (bother someone)

행복하다 --> 행복하게 하다 (make someone happy)

늦다 --> 늦게 하다 (make me late)

Structure

1.1 Intransitive verbs (자동사): N1이/가 N2을/를 V-게 하다 = N1 make/let N2 happen

쉬게 하다 = let students rest, 

뛰게 하다 = let me run, 

피게 하다 = make flowers bloom, 

울게 하다 = make me cry,

선생님께서는 학생들을 10분 동안 쉬게 하셨어요.

The teacher let students rest for 10 minutes.

봄은 꽃들을 피게 하다.

Spring makes flowers bloom.

1.2 Transitive verbs (타동사): N1이/가 N2에게 V-게 하다 = N1 make/let N2 do something

밥을 먹게 하다 = make me eat rice.

책을 읽게 하다 = let me read the book.

영화를 보게 하다 = let me watch the movie.

신발을 사게 하다 = let me buy the shoes.

엄마는 안나에게 친구들 앞에서 피아노를 치게 하셨어요.

Anna's mother made her play the piano in front of her friends.

교수님은 학생에게 금요일까지 숙제를 내게 하셨어요.

The professor had the students submit their homework by Friday.

2. N1이/가 N2을/를 A-게 하다 = Cause someone to be in a state described by the adjective

마크 씨는 질문을 너무 많이 해서 나를 귀찮게 해요.

Mark annoyed me with all his questions.

요즘 저를 우울하게 하는 일들이 많이 생겼어요.

A lot of things have happened recently to depress me.

아이의 웃음이 저를 기쁘게 해요.

A child’s smile makes me happy.

3. V-게 하다 = Let/permit someone do something

어머니는 아이가 한 시간 동안 게임을 놀게 해요.

The mother lets her child play game for one hour.

부모님은 제가 밤늦게 못 나가게 하셨어요.

My parents won't let me outside at late night.

Examples:

1. 엄마가 아이에게 약을 먹게 했어요.

The mother made the child take medicine.

2. 슬픈 영화가 제 마음을 아프게 했어요.

The sad movie broke my heart / made my heart hurt.

3. 이 그림이 제 방의 분위기를 밝게 해요.

This picture brightens the mood in my room.

4. 앤디 씨는 너무 부탁을 많이 해서 저를 짜증나게 해요.

Andy annoyed me since he asked for help so frequently.

5. 아버지는 아침마다 토니 씨가 운동을 하게 하셨어요.

Tony father made him do exercising every morning.

6. 친구들은 마크 씨를 생일 파티에서 행복하게 해요.

Mark friends make him happy at his birthday party.

7. 안나 씨는 저를 기분이 좋게 해요.

Anna makes my mood feel better.

It rained yesterday, but the weather is clear today.

- Yes, I guess the rain made the air clean/ cleaned the air.

12. 겨울에는 무엇을 하면 건강에 좋아요?

- 발을 따뜻하게 하면 건강에 좋아요.

What do you do in winter for your health?

- Keeping your feet warm is good for your health.

Specific usage:

1. When used to prohibit someone do something, 못 V-게 하다 is used.

언니는 전화할 때는 자기 방에 못 들어오게 해요.

When my big sister gets a call, she won't let anyone in her room.

의사 선생님이 환자에게 매운 음식을 못 먹게 했어요.

The doctor forbade the patient to eat spicy food.

2. V-도록하다 and V-게 만들다 express the same meaning as V-게 하다.

마리 씨는 나를 웃게 하는/만드는 사람이에요.

Mary makes me laugh.

엄마는 아이가 혼자 밖에 못 나가게/나가도록 했어요.

The mother didn't let her child go outside alone.

Comparison between V-이/히/리/기/우/추- irregular causative verbs and V-게 하다.

1. V-이/히/리/기/우/추- causative verbs: the subject of sentence performs direct action for someone

엄마는 아이를 씻겼어요.

The mother washed her child’s face.

2. V-게 하다 : the subject makes someone do action.
